We've had a few questions about the experience level needed to participate in the various club activities.
We really have three different groups within the club, with different goals and needs- the original, regular group; a beginner group; and a performance group.
I do want to stress, all players of every level are always welcome at any of our meetings.
The BBUG - No experience is needed at all in the Basic and Beginner Ukulele Group (the BBUG). Just drop in at any time with a uke and a smile! Yes, a music stand and a pencil are helpful, and having $5 for a donation (or whatever you can afford, if anything) is appreciated...
The BBUG is all about getting started on the instrument in a relaxed, supportive atmosphere, with lots of instruction and easy, basic music. It's also a great venue for more experienced players who just want to hang out and play some simple songs, and maybe share a bit of what they know with people who are just starting out on the instrument.
The beginner group was started because the regular group has gotten to the point where it might a little tough for real beginners to just show up at the meetings and feel they are in an ideal learning environment. Not that we're always playing super difficult stuff at the regular meetings, but much of it would be very challenging for- let's say- someone who picked up their first ukulele the day before and is trying to get started.
The Regular Group is almost more like a "beginner-intermediate" group. It`s all about playing and singing and hanging out. Members often bring in new music, we sometimes play some more challenging pieces, and maybe discuss a little theory and techniques.
There's not a lot of beginner-level instruction at the regular meetings, so if you are a real beginner you'll probably spend most of the time just soaking up the feel of playing with others, playing a chord or two here and there, and singing along. (Which is all very valuable for your musical development, but it's not for everyone.)
The Performers Group is for people who want to get out and, well, perform. This is the group for digging into the music and really working on specific sings.
Not all of the performance group repertoire is very difficult but we try to really nail the music. Less experienced players are welcome in the performers group, but would not necessarily be covering all of the material in the same way as the more experienced members.
I hope this helps. Whatever group or groups you feel is right for you, we hope to see you at a meeting.
Uke on!
